In pictures: A day in Cambridge

Mention Cambridge and the first thing that springs to most people’s minds is either the University or punting on the city’s river.

I would agree but as a first time visitor (just for day) I would argue there is a lot more to see, do and enjoy in this fine city.

Cambridge is one of those places that I have seen and heard a lot about for a number of years, often thought ‘that would be interesting to visit;, but never actually got round to doing it. Until now.

And I am glad I did (or should I say, we did, with Mrs Q in tandem).

Being one who enjoys the beauty and grandeur of historic buildings, I was in my element. There is so much to marvel in and soak up around every corner.  Cambridge University and its 31 stunning colleges is at the hub of this with the most famous being Kings College and its distinctive gothic chapel.

As much as I love being by or on water, the thought of punting on the River Cam did not really appeal, despite the incessant touting by young student types to do so.  Prime example of this being approached and asked six times in a two minute period by rep from the same company.  And having seen the attempts of those self-hiring and attempting to punt their way up and down the Cam, it is best to leave it to those in the know. That is if you fancy sharing (or squashed on) with other tourists; they do maximise the floating craft so prepare for a cosy ride.

With that in mind, instead we opted to see Cambridge by bus on a double-decker trip with City Sightseeing. It is well worth the money with the opportunity to hop on and hop off at the many different stops that are available.

Two of those, The Fitzwilliam Museum – one of several museums to consider visiting – and Cambridge University Botanic Garden are other key attractions for visitors. We did consider the latter but typically we pick the only day of the week (a Monday) when it is closed.  Something for another day.

But I won’t go into too much more detail of our day and visit, just to say if you haven’t visited, make a point to do so. You will not be disappointed.

Hopefully the gallery below will provide you with a brief insight into what you can expect from a visit to this most famous of university cities.
