Review: Sunday lunch at Stonebridge

For one reason or another, it’s been a while since I have enjoyed a proper Sunday lunch out and believe me when I say this was worth waiting for.

Yesterday Mrs Q and I were kind guests of our friends at Stonebridge Golf at Meriden. As well as being one of the region’s leading golf courses (see their rating on Golfshake for example), they have further developed their food offering in the last year or so s it was well overdue that we sampled what is now on the menu.

Stonebridge have always had a good reputation for their food and with a talented new chef team joining in the last year, part of their extensive menu which now also includes a dedicated Breakfast menu has seen a re-introduction of their popular Sunday Roasts.

So when the offer came up to pop in and sample what’s now on offer, we didn’t need any persuasion (just a case of finding a spare date to do it).

First of all forget any illusion or pre-conceptions about golf clubs being a member-only dominated environment and unfriendly to visitors and non-members. Times have moved on and Stonebridge is a very modern thinking and looking club with a strong emphasis on not the golf side of things (naturally) but also welcoming visitors and guests to dine and drink with them throughout the week. And it is clearly working as they attract a strong regular following and custom from Meriden, Coventry, Nuneaton and Solihull as well as from those staying at the neighbouring Somers Wood Caravan Park. So you can expect a warm friendly welcome as soon as you walk through the door (even before you enter) and once you are in the Spike Bar.

In fact within a minute of getting our table, a group of golfers next to us also enjoying a drink and something from the Sunday Lite Bites Bar Menu said they weren’t sure if our reserved table was for a first date or not (erm, no, but it made us laugh).

So to the Lunch. We opted for the three course option of starter, main and dessert (but there is the option of just one course or two as well), and it is a good job we didn’t each much in the morning.

First up, for starters I have gone for the Soup of the Day, which was a lovely carrot and butternut squash number, very hearty and filling with rustic bread, whilst Mrs Q went for the Ham and Cheese Croquettes. Being one that steers well clear of anything to do with cheese (except pizza..weird but true), the croquettes were light, delicate and the proverbial melt-in-the-mouth.

Both were just the right amount ahead of our mains where we opted for the Roast Beef and Roast Chicken which were both cooked to perfection, the beef well done and succulent (I’m not one for having my beef rare or red) and the chicken tender and moist. As you would expect both came with all the trimmings of a good sized portion of seasonal vegetables, excellent roast potatoes, very well-sized Yorkshire Pudding (I can never get mine to rise that much) and rich gravy for each dish. The only thing missing for Mrs Q at least was mint sauce (she is on who has to have it on most things, but she didn’t like to ask).

This then brings us onto our desserts. On another day I may have skipped dessert because what we had enjoyed already was pushing my limits, but it would be rude of me to refuse a final course and I am glad I didn’t. Sticky Toffee Puddings with Salted Caramel Ice Cream for both of us just got the nod over Chocolate Brownie or the ice cream medley. The perfect finish rich in sauce with a soft pudding that crumbles away just nicely with ice cream completing the job.

Even if we wanted it, there was simply no room for any more for both of us. The chef and his team must have known our limits as our three courses individually and collectively were the ideal size and just right.

Overall we enjoyed a fabulous tasty and filling lunch which at £16.95 for three courses is great value. Throw in lovely hospitality and in a great warm and friendly setting, you cannot go wrong.

Sunday Lunch at Stonebridge Golf is only £9.95 for one course, £13.95 for two, or go for all three courses as we did at only £16.95 per person.

Serving from 12:00 midday every Sunday, they also have a separate Sunday Bar Menu and as mentioned a Lite Bites Menu too.

No advance booking is required but it is advisable to get there early especially if you are dining as a group. For larger family or social groups, contact them about use of their Somers Suite.
