Review: Luminate at Coombe 2023 lights up the build-up to Christmas

Coombe Abbey, the Princess and the Gunpowder Plot

In the coming week up and down the country and locally, bonfires will be lit and firework displays will light up the night skies to celebrate Bonfire Night.

Whilst the fifth of November is a time of people coming together for food, drink, bonfires, sparklers and firework pyrotechnics, it is a reminder of one of England’s most notorious acts of treason way back in 1605. The Gunpowder Plot, the failed attempt to kill King James I and his courtiers by blowing up the Houses of Parliament.

No sooner had plans been made and booked for my recent visit and guided tour of Rugby School, the birthplace of rugby football, and exploring the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum than I receive an invitation.  A special one too.
